Important Information About Colombia

Measurement System

Colombia uses the International System of Units (SI). For visitors from countries that use the imperial system, it is important to note that distances are measured in kilometers, not miles. Height is measured in meters and centimeters, not feet and inches. Weight is expressed in kilograms and grams, not pounds and ounces. Road speed is given in kilometers per hour (km/h). Temperature is measured in degrees Celsius (°C), not Fahrenheit. This difference is especially relevant when checking weather forecasts or shopping for groceries.

Electricity

The electrical system in Colombia operates at 110 volts alternating current and 60 Hertz (110V AC, 60Hz). The most common plugs are type A and B, which have two flat pins, or three pins (two flat and one round for grounding). If your devices use a different voltage or have different plugs, you will need adapters or converters. These can be easily found in electronics stores, department stores or even some hotels. For sensitive or high-value equipment, a surge protector is also recommended.

Tourist Information

Colombia's National Network of Tourist Information Points (PITS) offers free assistance to travelers. These points, administered by the National Tourism Fund (Fontur), are located in strategic locations such as airports, transportation terminals, and historic centers of the main tourist cities and municipalities. At the PITS, travelers can obtain maps, brochures, recommendations on local attractions, information on lodging and transportation, and advice on safety precautions. Staff usually speak English as well as Spanish.

Language

Spanish is the official and predominant language in Colombia. However, the country recognizes more than 60 indigenous languages and two creole languages. In the main tourist areas and in tourism-oriented businesses, it is common to find English-speaking staff. However, outside of these areas, English proficiency may be limited. Travelers are advised to learn some basic Spanish phrases to facilitate communication, especially in rural or less touristy areas. Colombians often appreciate the efforts of visitors to speak their language.

Transportation

Colombia offers a variety of transportation options. In large cities such as Bogotá, Medellín and Cali, there are public transportation systems that include buses, subway systems or metrocable. Cabs are plentiful and generally safe, although it is recommended to use ride-hailing apps such as Uber or similar local services for safety and price transparency. For inter-city travel, there are intercity bus services and frequent domestic flights. To explore rural areas or destinations off the main tourist routes, car rental is an option, although caution should be exercised and attention should be paid to road conditions and local safety recommendations.

Time Zones

Colombia maintains a single time zone throughout the year: UTC-5 (the same as U.S. Eastern Standard Time when it is not on daylight saving time). This means that there are no daylight saving time changes, which simplifies planning for travelers. This time consistency makes it easier to coordinate activities and travel within the country.

Culture and Customs

Colombian culture is rich and diverse, the product of a mixture of indigenous, European (mainly Spanish) and African influences. Colombians are known for their warmth, friendliness and hospitality towards visitors. Respect and courtesy are highly valued in social interactions. The family plays a central role in Colombian society. Music and dance are an integral part of the culture, with genres such as cumbia, vallenato and reggaeton being very popular. Gastronomy varies significantly between regions, offering a wide range of flavors and typical dishes. It is appreciated that visitors show interest and respect for local traditions and customs. In general, Colombia is an informal country in terms of dress, except in business situations or formal events.
